Uganda grows a lot of coffee. Most of it is Robusta, which specialty buyers historically ignored — but the Arabica story on the slopes of Mount Elgon and in the Rwenzori mountains has been quietly building for years. Altitudes push past 2,000 metres, and producers are experimenting with the washed, honey, and natural processing specialty markets expect.
The cup leans toward red fruit, dark chocolate, and a rounder body than the Kenyan or Ethiopian profile. SL28, SL14, and local heirloom varieties are the ones to know. The Rwenzori lots in the west are often floral and bright; Mount Elgon in the east tends richer and fruitier.
Uganda is one of the origins most likely to show up on a specialty menu in the next five years that didn’t used to be there. Worth a bag.
Uganda baut viel Kaffee an.
