Zambian specialty coffee is a small story with a disproportionate quality ceiling. The main growing area is the Muchinga Mountains and the northern highlands, at altitudes up to 1,600 metres. Large estates dominate here more than the smallholder cooperatives you’d find further north in East Africa, but the result is consistent processing and cups that travel well.

The profile leans East African — bright citrus, red fruit, a clean well-defined body — without the intensity of a top Kenyan. Varieties include Bourbon and Java, processed mostly washed. The volumes are small enough that a Zambian coffee on a specialty menu is usually there because a roaster went hunting.

Don’t skip it when it shows up. The top lots reward the attention.
