Nicaragua’s specialty coffee grows in Jinotega, Matagalpa, and Nueva Segovia, at altitudes that push up to 1,700 metres. The country has a long coffee history and a shorter specialty one, shaped by the ups and downs of regional politics and weather that doesn’t always cooperate.

What makes it through the supply chain tends to be worth the wait. The cup leans cocoa, caramel, and stone fruit — softer than Guatemalan, with a gentler acidity. Caturra and Pacamara are common, the latter producing the kind of thick, sweet, tropical cup that specialty buyers hunt for.

Nicaragua doesn’t get the attention its neighbours do. The specialty drinkers who seek it out tend not to be disappointed.
