Coope Dota: Certified Carbon Neutral Coope Dota are a farming Cooperative established in 1960, they represent approximately 1100 growers in Tarrazú, San Jose. In 2011, they were the first coffee processor in the world to achieve carbon neutral certification. This certification not only covers their immediate operations. The Cooperative’s carbon footprint can also be measured in other ways- Coope Dota own their own roastery as well as grocery and supply shops for their members, even the transportation of the sold coffee to the ports is covered. Their aim is to return extra money into the Cooperative, creating their own small-scale circular economy. Farming Practices Coffee waste is used to create nutrient rich compost. Purpose built driers are partly fuelled by residual parchment (a cellulose layer that resembles paper when dried.) Larger lots are taken to a community mill; higher scoring and experimental lots are taken to a micro mill on the farm. Operations changed significantly in 2020 with the impact of Covid-19, a more hands off approach saw a shift in resource towards picking and harvesting- resulting in an immediate rise in quality for the 2021 season.
