About Gotiti This coffee is grown in perhaps the best-known coffee-producing regions in the world: Yirgacheffe. Every region in Ethiopia is divided into woredas (districts) and kebeles (communities). Gotiti is the ‘keblele’ and the people who live here belong to the Gedeo cultural tradition and speak dialects of a language with the same name. They live in communal villages that are characterized by lush forests, high altitudes, and indigenous coffee varieties, which all contribute to a practically perfect environment for growing absolutely stunning coffees. The main income source for the community is coffee that they grow on their own very small farms. False banana and acacia trees are used for shade for the coffee plants, which is necessary for high-quality coffee. (Fun fact: the acacia trees fix nitrogen in the soil, which acts as a completely natural fertilizer for coffee plants. How cool!) When the farmers’ coffee cherries are ripe, they transport them via mule (or foot!) to the centralized washing station in Gotiti. It’s a relatively new station that started in 2023 where over 800 folks from the community deliver their cherries. From there, the washing station meticulously washes, pulps, ferments, and dries the coffee all while maintaining traceability through lot separation by supplier name, location, and quantity. And, wow, this one really is outstanding. Our Green Coffee Buyer said it’s one of the best Ethiopians he’s tasted. It’s so complex, fresh, and fruity while maintaining a beautiful delicate quality.
