In Kayanza, Burundi's northern coffee-growing province, Businde Washing Station collects cherry from roughly 650 smallholder farmers within a few miles of the mill. The station is operated by Matsitsi Trading, founded by Matsitsi Zuberi in 2015, which runs three washing stations across Kayanza and Muyinga provinces with an emphasis on traceability and sustainability. Matsitsi pays 20% above local market rate for quality cherry deliveries, and once cherries arrive at Businde, they undergo a controlled fermentation followed by about twenty days of drying on raised beds. The result reflects both the high-elevation terrain of Kayanza, between 1,650 and 1,800 meters, and a broader shift in the region as Burundi's coffee farmers have pushed to build out infrastructure and quality after decades of low pay and underinvestment.
