Kenya produces some of the most consistently stunning coffee in the world. The main regions sit in the highlands around Mount Kenya and the Aberdare range, and around Nairobi in Kiambu, Muranga, and Nyeri. Farmers grow between 1,400 and 2,100 metres and deliver their cherry to cooperative washing stations — locally known as factories. The name stuck.
The double-fermented washed process, sometimes just called the Kenyan washed method, is what gives the cup its clean, well-defined edges. Blackcurrant is the note you’ll read about most often. Raspberry, grapefruit, and that particular savoury, tomato-like acidity are the rest of the story. Nothing else tastes quite like it.
SL28 and SL34, bred in the 1930s by Scott Laboratories, are still the varieties to know. Ruiru 11 and Batian are the newer disease-resistant options making headway with farmers. And if you see AA or AB on the bag, that’s bean size — not cup score — though old habits die hard at the export desk.
Nichts sonst schmeckt so.
