KENYA BERRIES, RED CURRANT, BLACKBERRY PRODUCER : RUMUKIA FCS SMALLHOLDERS VARIETAL : SL28 & SL34 PB PROCESS : WASHED REGION : MUKURWEINI, NYERI ALTITUDE : 1800 MASL We chose this peaberry for its berry character, which is what we usually look for in a Kenyan. It comes from Kagunyu, a factory in Mukurweini, Nyeri, where smallholders deliver their cherry to be processed. Most of them grow a few hundred SL28 and SL34 trees each on the slopes between Mt. Kenya and the Aberdares. Peaberry means the cherry formed a single round bean instead of two. The beans are smaller and denser, and tend to give a more concentrated cup. It is washed, and tastes of dark berries, red currant, and blackberry, with the kind of acidity you expect from Nyeri.
