Guatemala produces coffee you’d recognise from the first sip. The volcanic soil around Antigua, Huehuetenango, and Atitlán gives the beans a depth of cocoa and dried fruit that’s hard to mistake for anywhere else. Altitudes between 1,300 and 2,000 metres do the rest — slow cherry development, denser beans, more going on in the cup.

The classic profile is chocolate, red apple, spice, and a crisp acidity that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Washed processing dominates, done carefully on small farms and cooperatives that take sorting seriously. Bourbon and Caturra are the common varieties, with Pacamara and Pache making appearances in specialty lots.

Huehuetenango in the northwest is where to look for more unusual lots — the mountains are rougher, the logistics harder, and the lots that make it out tend to be worth the trouble.
