Rec Coffee was founded in 2009 by Yoshikazu Iwase and Osamu Kitazoe, who had begun selling coffee from a mobile cart in Hakata, Fukuoka the year before. Iwase went on to win the Japan Barista Championship in 2014 and place runner-up at the 2016 World Barista Championship, and the company later opened its own Hakata Roastery alongside roughly ten stores across Fukuoka, Tokyo and Taiwan.
